“Picturing Modern Womanhood" Lecture by Karen Sherry, Ph.D

March 30, 2017, 7:00pm - March 30, 2017, 8:00pm

“Picturing Modern Womanhood: Suffragettes, Flappers, and Other New Women in American Art, 1900-1950” Lecture by Karen Sherry, Ph.D The early decades of the 20th-century witnessed dramatic changes in American society in general and women’s lives in particular. Many women gained new educational, occupational, and political opportunities, while also enjoying unprecedented social and sexual freedoms. Their experiences challenged traditional gender hierarchies and long-held assumptions about female nature. The so-called New Woman embodied modern femininity and proliferated in the pictorial arts during this period. By surveying various permutations of the New Woman—including the ardent suffragette, the liberated flapper, the independent worker, and the gender-bending artist—this lecture critically examines the shifting and often conflicted attitudes about modern womanhood in the United States. This talk also provides historical context for many of the issues surrounding gender identity in the late 20th and 21st centuries, issues explored in the Maier's current exhibition "Investigating Identity: Race, Gender, and Sexuality in Contemporary Art." Light refreshments provided.

Happy 83rd birthday to women's rights activist and journalist Gloria Steinem! Steinem was one of the major leaders of the Women's Rights Movement of the 1960s and 1970s, and has continued to be a campaigner and commentator on numerous issues through the present day. Among her many accomplishments, she co-founded both Ms. Magazine and the Women's Media Center. Steinem was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom by President Barack Obama in 2013; she called the award a "medal for the entire women's movement." For adults who would like to learn more about this pioneering feminist's life, we highly recommend her excellent autobiography "My Life On The Road" at amzn.to/2niZ7E3 For an inspiring book about 26 real-life women who helped blaze the way for all women, we also recommend "Amelia to Zora: Twenty-Six Women Who Changed the World" for ages 7 to 10 at www.amightygirl.com/amelia-to-zora To introduce tweens and teens to 26 feminists who transformed America, check out "Rad American Women A-Z: Rebels, Trailblazers, and Visionaries Who Shaped Our History... And Our Future!" for ages 10 and up at www.amightygirl.com/rad-american-women-a-z For a global perspective, also check out the new companion book about 40 pioneering women from around the world, "Rad Women Worldwide," for ages 10 and up at www.amightygirl.com/rad-women-worldwide For more books for children and teens about the Women's Rights Movement, visit our "Women's Rights" section at amgrl.co/1Mqc2Op Thanks to Miss Revolutionaries for sharing this image!

The poet Linda Parsons read this at FOL yesterday. She wrote it after marching in a Women's March in Knoxville. Be inspired.

STAND UP
Sit down, sit down, sit down, sit down,
sit down, you’re rockin’ the boat.
—Frank Loesser, Guys and Dolls

Lo these many years,
I the peacemaker, the walker on eggshells,
the biter of lips, the please pleaser, the clay
not the molder, the stream not the bank,
the moss not the rock, the stern not the bow,
queen of if only I’d said, if only I’d done.
Lo I say unto you, I’m done with sit down,
sit down, done with the broom and its dust,
old love and its rust, the future walking right
out the door. Hear me, I’m here with a voice
from the gloom, the moon-filled room, rise
of wing to beat the band, however long
I must stand is how long I’ll rock,
rock, rock the boat.

Grab this, strike this,
be peace in the deafest of ears, be this,
if you can bear the whole of me holding
up half the sky’s the limit, be aware,
O beware the end is near, the end of silence
of reticence of swallowing it down, choking
on what can’t be told in mixed company.
I’ll be clearing my throat, unbending
my knee, strapping my heart to my sleeve.
The one speaking aloud who sings without
pause, the unturned cheek, the unshut eye,
who digs her heels in this wide-awake
moment and lets the mother tongue fly.

LWV-WC member Nancy Williams presented a program on Women and Politics Thursday at the Glade Spring Library. A former vice major of Glade Spring, Williams urges women to volunteer in order to understand how things are done. In relation to women running for office she said: "Women need to prepare themselves. Learn how politics works; know how to do a budget; and know how dollars need to be spent to get the best bang for your buck." ...
