New Aquatic Center Documents are available and what about that spending. How has taxpayer money been spent? Is the way money is being spent on campaigns an indicator of how taxpayers can expect their tax money to be spent?

Wow…all that wonderful stuff in the Vision 2020…all those great projects happening in some areas of town…All Town Council’s visions (see: ThinkChristiansburg.com). Then, on the other handthere are issues like:
F.O.I.A. … now let’s see where have I heard that before? Oh, yeah! It is that Freedom of Information thing. You know, that thing where at either the National or State Laws clarify a citizen’s right to access public documents.
Christiansburg Town Council talks fees for credit card payments. When so many discussions are held outside of the view of the public, and there is no record of those discussions for the public, there exists ample opportunity for citizens to come to their own conclusions...such as:

Remember we have one more May election before the move to November. That could mean one last big push to create change or, one final push to maintain the status quo for a few more years before the November elections have an impact.
6 years is a long time to wait for a Town Charter change that the Council voted on and passed. 6 years is a long time to wait to bring a document as important as the Town Charter up to date with the rest of the state. Who dropped the ball in the Town...
A recent Roanoke Times article "Town Council plots out Christiansburg's future", pretty much says it all. The only problem is there seems to be an item or two missing. Obviously, there were meetings held to develop such an in depth document out of public eye, and no citizen input was used.
The process of spending taxpayer money can be a very transparent process, or as is the case with the Town of Christiansburg, as clear as mud. If you have any questions, call your Town Council members and ask for clarification. Then, look/ask for the documents to support the answers!
New Finance Officer for the Town of Christiansburg could bring a lot of new ideas and a lot of opportunities. Of course, the Town Council's support will be needed but, the experience and expertise Ms. Tweedie brings is a major step in a positive direction.
