Monthly Archives: March 2010

Now you read it, Now you see it. Christiansburg Meetings online.

As many of you know, I started a website a couple of years ago and one of the things on that website are video recordings of Town Council and Planning Commission meetings.

I have rearranged that website MyVAResources.com a bit over time in an effort to make things easier to find. In the bar at the top you will see: TOWN OF CHRISTIANSBURG, VA. Clicking on that link will take you to a webpage with links to all of the various documents and information that have been obtained via FOAI requests or through my recording of Meetings. 1998 Citizen Survey by Christiansburg, How Much Has Changed? Hmmm…

A couple of years ago, I started requesting documents from the Town of Christiansburg and posting them on a website for citizens to have access to since they were not on the town’s website. One such set of documents that I requested was the citizen input information used for development of the comprehensive plan.

What are some of the Issues that Christiansburg Candidates may want to address?

Some of those issues are available at a website…no, not mine. It is the website that Meghan Dorsett, Candidate for Mayor, has set up to share ideas with citizens. One the first page is a link to a survey where she is asking citizens to provide their views on issues. Read the rest of this entry »

The Economy and Jobs in Montgomery County VA

Some interesting information can be found on the Montgomery County Economic Profile provided by the Virginia Employment Commission.
(http://www.alex.vec.virginia.gov/lmi/pdfs/communityprofiles/5104000121.pdf) Unfortunately, it does not differentiate between Blacksburg, Christiansburg, and Montgomery County proper, but it doesn’t take too much imagination to put two and two together. Read the rest of this entry »

Christiansburg! At last the pool is open….

It opened about 2:00 this morning, in Cambria. Oh, yeah, a river of mud and gravel flooded down Depot Street from both directions filling drain paths and blocking routes to the storm drains. Meghan Dorsett and I have been out for the last 2+ hours shoveling and trying to keep the Depot and Emporium from being damaged AGAIN!. (By the way, I also cleaned up the blockage that was pushing water up against the Electrical Supply store about 2 inches deep in water, hope they didn’t get much flood damage this time. What are some of the crucial issues this campaign?

Yesterday, I wrote about the Aquatic Center. In order to really see why people are a bit upset about that roughly $20,000,000.00 convenience, one needs to look at some of the areas that some consider more of a necessity such as traffic, drainage, finances, etc. Read the rest of this entry »

Aquatic Center on Steroids. When did the change occur? (Or, how to use FOIA!)

When Christiansburg residents originally reported wanting a swimming pool (approximately $4,000,000.00 in cost), very few of them ever envisioned the rather … uh … large structure (approximately $20,000,000.00 in cost) that it would become. I have heard from a lot of people asking me how this could have happened without them knowing anything about it. Here’s how: Read the rest of this entry »

Sunshine Week: The Real Local Heroes

As many of you know, I have spent a LOT of time reading, re-reading, then reading again the minutes of Town Council and Planning Commission Meetings for the Town of Christiansburg. Among the most important thing that I discovered during that process is who the real “Local Heroes” are here in town. Read the rest of this entry »

Happy Sunshine Week! Your Government, Your Right to Know!!

Sunshine Week: March 14 thru 20 of 2010.

“Sunshine” may make it possible, but it is only YOU, the people who can make open government a reality. Few have said it any clearer than Attorney General Eric Holder, “The American people have the right to  information about their government’s activities, and these new guidelines will ensure they are able to obtain that information under principles of openness and transparency, Read the rest of this entry »

YOU are the one who can make a difference in the current Economic Crisis.

As a former Guardian ad Litem and child abuse/neglect investigator, I can tell you that when economic times are hard, there is an increase in the reporting and the verified occurrence of situations where children are either abused or neglected. The stress of trying to make ends meet, particularly for those who were just barely doing that when the economy was good, creates the extra stress on families that leads to domestic violence and child abuse.
