Wikipedia
- (gotta get those definitions right!) |
Auditor
of Public Accounts (Virginia) - where you can go to
find out information about how your town, city, county, or
state is performing financially. Both current and historical
data is available to show sources of revenue and where the
money was spent. |
VAZO - Virginia
Association of Zoning Officials - source of information
on changes in the State Codes and pending bills that can directly
or indirectly how your neighborhood looks! |
|
|
CPEAV - Citizens
Planning Education Association of Virginia - another
great source of information convering landuse, planning, and
zoning issues. This site specifically focuses on citizens
and providing education on the process. |
e-Podunk - requires
you to set up a free registration in order to access information.
It only takes a few minutes and will open the doorway to a
wealth of information about jurisdictions from towns and cities
to whole countries. Census and demographic information, attractions,
historic records, economy, education, environment...all of
that and much more is right at your fingertips. |
FedSpending.org
- want to know where your federal tax money is going? Here
is a site to check. This is a fairly new source of information
and not all states are represented here. Virginia is and a
quick look at the map associated with Virginia, shows where
most of the federal funds go...suffice it to say, the western
portion of the state sure doesn't see much of that money! |
Virginia Coalition
for Open Government - I can't say enough positive
about this organization and the awesome efforts they are putting
forth to keep public information ... PUBLIC!! It is in large
part due to this group, that this webpage for Christiansburg
public information exists. They were instrumental in providing
me with the information necessary to traverse the Freedom
of Information Act pathways despite multiple obstacles! |
Weldon Cooper
Center for Public Service - great source of data -
possibly one of the most valid and reliable sources of demographic
information around. Want to compare local tax rates? This
is the place to go! How about school enrollment, income, workforce
information! It's all here. (This is also where I got the
Freedom of Information Booklet I've been passing out to people...a
small fee but a huge investment:) |
Virginia General Assembly
LEGISLATIVE INFORMATION SYSTEM - here is where you
find quick access to the State Codes. Remember that Virginia
is a Dillon Rule state. That means if your jurisdiction is
doing something, it is the State Codes that give them the
power to do it. They also provide information on sessions
of the legislature (both current and hsitorical) which includes
wonderful information about various bills that have been passed
and those pending. Information on the State Budget is right
here as well as a wealth of other information. (When is the
last time you read the Constitution of the Commonwealth of
Virginia?) |
Virgina
Courts Case Information - look up information here
about court cases at all jurisdictional levels. The site can
be a bit troublesome to use, but by trying various search
terms you can usually find what you are looking for with some
time. It is unclear how frequently this is updated. You will
only get basic information and tracking at the site for free.
There are some pay options that are availalbe but I have never
used them. It's about as easy for me to just go to the Court
House and get copies. |
