Crab Creek just upstream from the Old Depot Building in Cambria

The foliage surrounding Crab Creek provides food for many wild animals. I have seen groundhogs, squirrels, deer, a Great Blue Heron, and yes, the occasional skunk showing up for the buffet.

(See additional photos in the Crab Creek & its Tributaries Photo Album)

Another thing special about this creek is that it is in trouble. Sediment and E. coli, some of the results from storm water runoff, have been significant enough to warrant concern and there is a 2008 Impaired Waters report from the DEQ that will give you some of the details.

The Virginia DEQ also offers another more detailed document from 2004 Fecal Bacteria and General Standard Total Maximum Daily Load Development for Crab Creek.

Environment Health and Safety Online allows you to search for companies in your area with known violation. I did a search using "Virginia" and zip code of "24073" and this list came up for review. (If the 2nd link does not work, just follow my search steps at the first link and you will end up there.)

However, there are things that people who care can do to help heal and maintain this stream. Go to the website for Virginia Save Our Streams and look at some of the wonderful things going on throughout the state. Maybe you'll get some ideas:)
